Editorial Review
If there is a company that bleeds molten aluminum, it’s Cannondale. Although it now utilizes carbon in many of its new designs, the company was instrumental in popularizing the oversize aluminum frame that it started building in 1984. The latest evolution of Cannondale’s alloy frame, called CAAD9, uses the company’s Optimo custom-butted and -tapered aluminum tubes joined with its signature smooth welds. Plus, the frame is still handmade right here in the USA–a rarity these days, especially in this price range. Don’t mistake the CAAD9 for your father’s unforgiving oversize aluminum bike–it has a degree of resilience and liveliness that’s not often found in many value–priced alloy rides. But, like a classic country tune, there is still a twang that resonates from road imperfections that’s usually toned down by carbon, ti and steel. Every pedal stroke is converted into forward motion by the stout chassis and it never gives the sensation that your effort is wasted in flex. Shimano brakes, a 105 crank and an Ultegra rear derailleur are gems not often found on bikes at this price, but the big question for most will be whether or not to spend about $400 more for Cannondale’s lowest-price Six13, a half-aluminum, half-carbon frame. If comfort is your number one priority, then the answer is yes, buy the Six13. However, if raw speed and quality parts float your boat, this alloy ride packs a punch. Add in its homegrown heritage and the CAAD9 5 is a home-run value that should be on the radar of every performance-oriented rider on a budget.
